A Letter from the Filmmaker
Like millions of people around the globe, I sat stunned staring at the television on that unforgettable morning of September 11, 2001. I was angry, frightened and unsure of what steps to take and what had happened to the world I knew.
I had no way of knowing on that very afternoon, when I decided to volunteer, that my life would be forever transformed. When I became one of the "Renegade Volunteers," my perspective changed from "What will happen to me?" to "What can I do to help?"
I directed THE HEART OF STEEL so that, in an era of terror and uncertainty, students, patrons and citizens alike can learn the powerful lessons of self-sacrifice and community service, and determine what they can do to make their neighborhoods better and safer for the future.
I am proud to be in alliance with The September 11th Families Association, who remain dedicated to working today for a better tomorrow. Their latest project, The Tribute Visitor Center, is directly across from the World Trade Center site and has had over 100,000 visitors.
The core of volunteerism begins in libraries, schools and congregations. It is my hope that the School/Library Commemorative Edition DVD of THE HEART OF STEEL paves the way for thought-provoking discussion about responsibility and the rewards of service in the face of disaster.
With warm regards,
Angelo J. Guglielmo, Jr.

Tribute Visitors Center
The September 11th Families Association has embarked on an exciting new endeavor. Recognizing that an estimated eight million people visit the World Trade Center site annually, the Association has launched an initiative to develop Tribute, a visitors center dedicated to educating the public about September 11th. Tribute will be located directly across the street from the WTC site. While the WTC memorial is being built over the next five years, the center will serve as an interim place for millions of visitors. There people can learn about our loved ones, the events of September 11th and the ensuing rescue and recovery efforts through first hand accounts. The 9/11 community — which includes family members, survivors, residents, recovery workers and volunteers — will be able to share their stories and experiences with visitors through a variety of programs.
